Rolling Contact Fatigue Test Rig

A rolling contact fatigue test rig suitable for testing of sintered and hardened specimens was designed and developed. It is of twin disc type comprising test specimens of simple geometry and small size. The schematic of the test rig. The twin disc type RCF test rig contains of five modules: drive module, roller assembly module, loading module, lubrication module and instrumentation module.

The Sound level meter and accelerometer are employed to detect the failure point of the specimens. A piezo electric accelerometer is attached to the block supporting the test roller shaft and the microphone of the sound level meter is placed at a distance of about 15 cm from the roller assembly module for the condition monitoring of the test system. A load cell, which measures the load applied on the rollers, is attached to the block supporting the test roller shaft. Thermocouple, placed just below the contact of the rollers, detects the output oil temperature. Speed sensors are used to measure the speeds of the shafts. Sensors are connected to an analog to digital (A/D) converter, which in turn connected to a personal computer (PC). The signals are continuously monitored on the PC screen during the test period and the data are stored.
